Why you should try a Sea Salt Cleanse

June 19, 2013

Sea salt CleanseI’m a pretty healthy guy, but sometimes I wonder if my body is running as efficient as it could be. I eat healthy foods (most of the time) and drink plenty of water. I exercise a couple of times a week to make sure my heart rate gets a little kick in the rear.

So… I’m good right? Well… almost.

I compare this to maintaining a car. I check the oil every two weeks, make sure I put good gas in the tank, and glance at the tires to make sure they have enough tread.

Should be safe.. Or am I missing something?

Think of a very expensive sports car, driving around town looking and sounding great. But what you fail to see is that the driver has failed to ever change the oil, or the transmission fluid, or any other important fluid. You see where I’m going…

I’m saying just about everyone needs some kind of personal system flush every now and then.

Who needs a Sea Salt Cleanse?

Just about everyone needs some type of a colon cleanse at some point, most of us just don’t realize how much better you will feel after.

  • You are gassy
  • You have symptoms similar to IBS
  • You have some digestion problems but don’t know what they mean
  • You have 1 or less bowel movements each day
  • You feel  bloated after a meal
  • You have never had a colon cleanse  before
  • You eat a lot of meat or animal protein, refined foods,  and dairy products
  • You have some health issues
  • You have skin problems like psoriasis
  • You have allergy issues
  • You have some type of respiratory trouble
  • You feel blocked up, or constipated on a regular basis
  • You just want to maintain your high level of health

*** Special Note: I say just about everyone because a sea salt cleanse may not be right for everyone. A small percentage of people will just absorb the salt water and not flush out, usually associated with some type of mineral deficiency.

How does a Sea Salt Cleanse work?

A sea salt cleanse is a method used to flush out your system and keep your colon healthy and clean. The best part is that it actually cleanses your entire GI tract, getting everything out from your mouth to bottom end!

This is what makes a Salt Water Flush better than any enema or colonics. These are both effective methods to cleanse as well, but using the sea salt flush will help with many more problems your system is having.

Colonics and enemas only remove the body waste from your colon.  A Sea Salt Flush removes the waste, including the gas, from the small intestine. In addition to that, the high quality salt you are using will also act as a healing agent to even out your pH levels throughout your entire gastrointestinal tract.

A healthy pH level in the intestines reduces the amount of bad bacteria, viruses, pathogens, and fungi that create all kinds of trouble for your digestion.

A Sea Salt Cleanse can provide a ton of relief from embarrassing gas, bloating, digestive irritability, cramping, and excessive burping, and so on. When you do a sea salt flush regularly, and use a good quality Sea Salt, all of these symptoms will seem to go away.

The best part about the flush is it’s cheap, quick, and simple which makes this even better for your time and wallet.

The Easy Sea Salt Flush Routine

A Sea Salt flush is a salt solution that you drink when you wake up in the morning. An empty stomach is key, that’s why morning is the best time. The flush requires a big teaspoon of high quality sea salt, I use Himalayan salt, and a large container of water.

This salty solution contains the same specific gravity as your blood so your kidneys don’t actually process it, and it’s not absorbed into the blood stream. The flush works its way through your intestinal system, kind of like a watery bulldozer, pushing all the garbage all the way out the end.

Now not just any kind of sea salt will work for this. Always check the label of what you are buying, there are plenty of cheap choices that claim to be real sea salt.

What you are looking for is pure, natural, unprocessed sea salt. I use a high quality Himalayan Crystal salt that can be found at your local health food store, or online. I recommend buy from Solay Wellness, the price is the best and the quality is really good.Shop Solay Gourmet Himalayan Salt Great part about these guys is the shipping as well, it always takes about 3 days to be delivered to my front porch.

Do not use regular table salt for this flush!

Regular table salt is poison. It is chemically treated and processed so that all the minerals are stripped out, and all you get is the sodium chloride. Then the anti-caking agents are added and this is just not healthy. These salts are highly toxic and can be very costly to your health. Read more about the difference between sea salt vs. table salt he

Sea Salt Cleanse Instructions

  1. When you first wake up in the morning, before drinking or eating anything, (including coffee!)how to make alkaline water

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of the high quality sea salt, Himalayan salt if you have it, to 1 quart of room temperature water. Use good quality filtered water, spring water, or mineral water. Fiji water works well also.

  1. Slightly warming the water can increase your maximum results, and may speed the process up a bit. Just pour the quart into a small pot and heat up, do not boil!!

  1. The taste of the flush isn’t for everyone; some people even hold their noses while drinking. Just do what you need to do to get it down. Personally I prefer the taste of salt in my water now, maybe just an acquired taste.

  1. You must drink the entire salt flush within a few minutes, I try to just stand there and slam it all in a couple of big gulps.  Then you drink another quart of the same water within 30 minutes.

  1. Do not eat anything for at least the next 2 hours. Your body must have time to work! By not having anything in your stomach after allows your body to focus on the task at hand. Avoid drinking coffee (I know), tea, or anything else that may be dehydrating. Just keep drinking water.

What happens next?

Now the fun begins!  Most people experience several bowels movements within 1 to 2 hours. The first movement can happen within the first half hour, so don’t expect to just hop in the car right away! Stay near the bathroom and be ready.

While waiting for the first bowel elimination I prefer to help the process along by lying down on my side and gently rubbing on my stomach and abdomen for about 10 minutes, then flip over to the other side and repeat. I’ve found this to be helpful and it relaxes me as well.

Now don’t think that this is like explosive diarrhea, or painful. It’s not that bad at all. Just have something handy to read and expect to spend the next couple of hours wearing a path back and forth to the bathroom.

It’s probably safe to leave the house after a couple of hours. A good indication that you are done is the bowel movements will become less frequent. If the last elimination was mainly clear fluid, then the flush should be about done.

This may not happen exactly the same way for everyone, and this is not a science. It may take a couple of different flush sessions to achieve a complete gastrointestinal flush, but that’s ok. You’re making healthy progress.

What if it didn’t work?

There are, unfortunately a small percentage of people who will not flush out. I’m not exactly sure why, some people say it’s a mineral deficiency, or internal damage to the lining of your gastrointestinal tract (before the flush), or maybe a lack of specific beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract.

Also people who tend to retain water do not flush well either. Women who are close to that time of the month may also have trouble flushing for this reason. This will only cause some bloating and extra water retention, which may be a little uncomfortable at worst.

My first few flushes went really well, just as described above. But I had one that just made me feel full of water for a few hours, and caused a lot of urination. I still felt ok during and after, and it could’ve been from a large meal I had the day before.

I recommend trying this at least a few times, varying your diet beforehand to get the best results. Maybe light salads and plenty of water the day before.

The bottom line is some of us just will not flush out and will have to explore the other cleansing alternatives.

Sea Salt Cleanse Routine

If the sea salt flush did work for you great! Let’s talk about how it went! If you feel like sharing your experience below please do. The more different experiences the better. It’s always nice to read about how different everyone’s bodies are. Good and bad.

You can take the salt flush as a scheduled routine or as you feel necessary. I vary my routine a little, but at least once a month is what I’ve been doing and it’s working great. Yours could be anywhere from a few times a week, or every day for a week just to see how you feel.

If you have severe bowel deficiencies, and the first flush worked well for you, you may want to do a sea salt cleanse once a day for one week. Then reduce the amount of days the following week, time permitting of course. You just can’t spend your whole life flushing! This will rapidly clear out your gastrointestinal tract, and restore proper bowel function.

Here’s a good example routine:

  • Sea salt flush once a day for week 1
  • Flush every other day for week 2, 3 total flushes
  • Week 3 flush 2 times
  • Week 4 flush 1 time
  • Every other week, to once a month indefinitely

Like I said, this is not an exact science. Every person is different and most will have great success, a small group of us will not. Hopefully you can develop a routine that is beneficial to you and your diet, and the feeling you will have is like no other.

I would love to hear about your experience, other tips or questions you may have.

Have a great flush!

Using Epsom Salt for Constipation

March 11, 2015

Epsom Salt For Constipation

Constipation is a common digestive problem experienced by nearly everyone.epsom salt for constipation Although constipation is not a serious medical problem, frequent constipation needs to be addressed. Chronic constipation usually means that a person needs to make significant dietary changes, among other things. Domestic products such as Epsom salt are particularly effective at relieving constipation. If used properly, Epsom salt is an effective short term solution, but it should not be relied upon in chronic cases.

How Widespread is Constipation?

Simply put, anyone can be affected by constipation at any time. It is estimated that approximately 2% of the U.S. population suffers from constipation on any given day . Furthermore, in the U.S. alone, over 4 million people are regularly affected by constipation whether it be from poor dietary choices, or health related problems. However, the U.S. is not the only population that experiences constipation on a massive scale. The problem occurs throughout many countries and cultures in the world.

What is Constipation?

Constipation, or irregularity, primarily affects the human digestive system. On an internal level, constipation occurs when feces in the bowels becomes hard and difficult to pass. Stool becomes hardened when the colon over-absorbs water from food. Furthermore, the longer stool stays in the digestive tract, the more water is leached from it making it even harder. Once the stool is in this state, it tends to block the digestive tract, making it difficult to defecate.

Symptoms Associated With Constipation

Irregular bowel movements cause an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful feeling in abdomen. stomach pain from constipationThis feeling is usually accompanied by excessive gas and bloating. Many times a person will have to take several trips to the bathroom due to the consistent pressure of an imminent bowel movement. A person who tries to defecate while constipated may also experience pain and burning in the anal area. In most cases, all of these symptoms disappear right after a bowel movement occurs.

What Causes Constipation?

As previously discussed, diet is often the main factor in causing constipation. A person eating a diet which lacks an appropriate amount of fiber is almost certain to suffer from costiveness. Foods that are high in sugar and fat contribute to the problem. People who are lactose intolerant or who are allergic to milk may also find that they are susceptible to constipation when they consume dairy products. high sugar foods constipationFinally, an imbalanced intake of caffeine or alcohol (instead of water) deprives the body of the fluids necessary to produce a bowel movement.

An inactive lifestyle also contributes to constipation. Medical experts suggest that people who live sedentary lifestyles are more likely to be affected by constipation. The exact science behind this is unknown, but it is believed that when the body is active, it helps biological processes remain active as well. Therefore, those who suffer from constipation are best advised to establish a regular exercise program.

What Is Epsom Salt?

Chemically speaking, Epsom salt is known as Magnesium Sulfate. It is actually not a salt at all; it is classified as a pure mineral compound. Most people are familiar with Epsom salt due to its uses in removing splinters, exfoliating skin, and as an additive to baths for sore muscles or strained ligaments. Epsom salt is also frequently recommended for people suffering from malodorous feet or to remove roughened patches of skin.

How to Use Epsom Salt

In the context of constipation, Epsom salts can be ingested to ease a bowel movement. It has the ability to increase the water content in the bowels due to the magnesium sulfate. Constipation problemsOnce additional water is introduced into the intestinal tract, the hardened stool becomes softened and will once again begin to move along the bowels. The chemical compound in Epsom salt also helps intestinal muscles to contract, which aids in moving feces out of the body.

The best way to take Epsom salt is to mix it with water for drinking purposes. A teaspoon portion of Epsom salt should be mixed into a glass containing at least 4 oz of water. This mixture should be consumed within a few minutes to achieve the maximum effect. In most cases, a single dosage will produce a bowel movement within 6 hours. Where constipation persists, it is appropriate to take another dosage after the initial 6 hour period.

Epsom salt can be taken in a higher dosage if the instructions specifically state so. A 2 tsp dose may be recommended by certain brands. Epsom salt can also be mixed in with juice if desired, although water is usually more effective. The Epsom salt remedy should not be used for more than one week to avoid creating a physical dependence.

When Epsom Salt Should Not Be Used

It is important to note that this type of home remedy is not safe for certain types of people. Pregnant women, and those currently breast feeding, should avoid using such remedies without a physician’s recommendation. Epsom salt for constipationPeople from suffering from a serious case of colic, nausea, or gastro-intenstinal problems should also refrain from using Epsom salt.

Other Remedies For Constipation

Aside from Epsom salt, there are many other home remedies for constipation. Food items such as figs, fennel seeds and honey are known to help stimulate bowel movements. A combination of lemon juice and warm water and some sea salt is also commonly used as a home treatment for constipation. Another age-old remedy is to drink a couple teaspoons of castor oil, which has laxative properties. If you are looking for an effective solution to constipation, it is best to try several different remedies to see which reacts the best with your body.

Health Benefits of a Himalayan Salt Lamp

February 19, 2015

For the most part, people trust the air that they breathe unless they can see pollutants or smell odors that are strong and offensive. The body even adapts to tolerate some odors in order for humans to continue breathing.

The Himalayan salt lamp has given people a way to improve air quality while receiving a light source. This is non-intrusive to most lifestyles and a functional part of almost any kind of decor.

The History of Himalayan Salt Lamps

Perhaps salt crystal lamp history can be traced through the fact that each year, people visit salt mines in search of rejuvenation and ways to enhance their moods and claim a sense of calm. Millions of years ago, the purest salt found on the planet was formed in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains. himalayan salt minesEarly societies used this salt to preserve food long before the invention of refrigerators and freezers. Traders in these societies also used the salt for currency, since it was such a valued commodity. Often, salt was traded for its equal weight in gold. In fact, many settlements that existed during the Neolithic Period, the last part of the Stone Age, were built near salt springs.

The value of salt through the ages has even been traced to the causes of war and confirmed through religious texts. Matthew 5:13 of the King James Version of the Holy Bible tells readers, “Ye are the salt of the Earth” to give some idea of the magnitude of people’s value. If soldiers were not fighting over salt, they were paid with salt for their duty in the military.

In U.S. history, salt was a major motivation for building the Erie Canal. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, people realized it was hard to move through the Appalachian Mountains to travel west of the 13 original colonies. moving salt through erie canalIt cost a lot to move goods and could sometimes take up to 45 days. The need to move salt deposits from Syracuse to the east coast pushed the construction of the canal.

As a therapy, people have always turned to salt for immediate cure. For example, even today, some people still drink salt water to cure chronic congestion problems, and they gargle with salt water after pulling a tooth. It soothes the raw ache in new injuries and removes bacteria. The recognition of the healing properties of salt prompted the establishment of salt-based therapies for patients at rehabilitation clinics. This was called speller therapy. It was only natural that some of this knowledge would translate to lighting sources with low-wattage bulbs.

How Salt Lamps Work

Salt lamps work by disbursing negative ions emanating from the salt crystals. The most common way people have felt the effects of negative ions has been when they have climbed a mountain and felt the difference in the air. It is fresh, calming and much easier to breathe in. Rainstorms, lightning, wind and sunlight all work together to create these ions in nature. Electrical charges make the air rich with oxygen and creates the ions needed for air clarity in the process.

USB Salt Lamps are great for the work area

In home environments, the electrical appliances that involve our simple daily routines do not have this same positive effect. They emit positive ions and lower energy levels. Electromagnetic fields, or (EMF), are associated with the radiation given off by electrical devices. Cell phones, laptops, personal devices, and video games consoles all give off these positive ions, or “electro-smog”, which is much more of a problem now than in years past. Those who work form home or spend a lot of time near computers in the home or work are gathering even more of these positive ions. Having a salt lamp reverses this trend and neutralizes the air.

The salt lamp works by attracting moisture when it is heated. The moisture causes evaporation through the salt in the lamp and gives off the ions necessary for healing. The number of ions a salt lamp releases will always depend on the size of a lamp and how much heat is generated from the light bulb. Naturally, the larger a room or space is, the larger a lamp would need to be in order to stay effective. A lamp the size of a night light would be sufficient for a space the size of an office cubicle. As long as the lamp is not immersed in water, which will dissolve the salt, it will last and not have to be replaced.

Benefits of a Himalayan Salt Lamp for the Body

Because these lamps clean the air, they are among the best natural home remedies for asthma and other types of respiratory conditions. The heat from the lamp kills dust, allergens, mold spores and bacteria, all of which can be dangerous triggers for those who deal with asthma. Salt lamps are powerful as natural remedies for asthma because they do not require the user to change lifestyle or routine. They simply add them to their homes and the remedy works while they move through their lives as usual.

The lamps have also been used by doctors and other healthcare workers for color therapy, also called chromotherapy. This form of alternative medicine has helped to diagnose and treat various illnesses by balancing a person’s energy. Patients have relied on this therapy to enhance positive moods and increase energy when they are feeling low.

How to Use a Himalayan Salt Lamp

One of the most popular places that people place their salt lamp is in the bedroom. It is especially effective here to counter the effects of dust and allergens on breathing while sleeping. In family rooms, or the room in the house where the family spends the majority of its time, it is helpful because it keeps the air clean and continually promotes a positive mood. People want the place where they make the most of their memories to be the light and uplifting.

It is also a good idea to place the lamp in rooms where there is an abundance of electrical appliances. A living room with a large flat screen television, or a kitchen with a dishwasher, stove, refrigerator and microwave are key targets. The lamp in these places, or in an office with computer emissions, counters the ions that can damage energy levels over time and leave you less productive.

When the lamp is not in use, it is best to unplug it and store it in a plastic bag to stop it from pooling moisture.

To clean it, simply use a damp cloth and wipe it down.  Avoid using it in a bathroom, which has too much moisture, or placing it outside, and the lamp could last a lifetime.

What Size Salt Lamp Do I Need?

While there is no exact science for the exact size salt lamp you need for a specific room, there are some basic guidelines.

  • 1 pound for every 10 square feet.
  • For larger rooms, several lamps should be strategically placed throughout.
  • For bedrooms, a 5-7 lb lamp on the nightstand should suffice.

This small chart should help determine what size your salt lamp should be.

Does sea salt really heal wounds?

January 14, 2015

Whats the first thing you do when you get a nasty cut?

Do you wash it first, or apply pressure? Or maybe you go straight for the antibacterial cream and bandaid. I know some people that go directly to the phone to call someone else and ask what to do….

We all know the first thing we need to do is

  • Stop the bleeding,
  • clean the wound.

But what to clean it with?

Recently I began using sea salt for many different ailments such as joint pain, constipation, better sleep, and even sore throats. There are so many more uses than just these, every person has different problems that can be solved.

Healing power of Sea Salt

Ever hear the expression, “throwing salt in the wound”?

This may sound like a painful remedy, but the reality is sea salt is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic.

For thousands of years people have been using salt to heal the body, and recently it is becoming more popular with people looking to avoid the drug store.

Ancient Egyptians had recorded its effectiveness, and the Roman doctors used sea salt in ointments and various drinks for healing purposes.himalayansaltcoarsegrain-sogourmet-sm

Even our first president, George Washington, bought some land in West Virginia so he could “take on the waters” more frequently.

Fast forward to today and our nations top soldiers, Navy SEALS even say that if they have a scrape or cut, they know that being in the sea water will clean them up and speed up the healing process.

What happens when the sea salt enters the wound is it forces the moisture out of the cells that are causing the swelling. By removing this moisture, the cells shrink up, and take bacteria with them. All of this is a natural, painless process.

Even though the “salt in the wound” expression sounds painful, it really isn’t if you use the right amount. I’m not telling you to just shake the salt shaker into a cut, of course, there is a small solution making process that is very easy and affordable.

The solution that i use is called Sole, pronounced (so-lay).

Learn more about making Sole at home here.

Sea salt for cuts

We’ve all had many different small cuts to major slices and abrasions. Sea salt can help all of them including

  • small cuts
  • abrasions
  • scratches
  • rashes
  • skin conditions (psoriasis and eczema to name some)
  • large cuts and slices
  • piercings
  • cold sores

Pretty much any open sore or skin condition and many more!

Using sea salt as a soak is the best way to get the solution into an infected area. You can make a Sole solution, which is easy to do with this recipe.

Salt soak in a bath for healing

To use the sea salt in a bath soak, use about a cup of the unprocessed sea salt in a very warm bath. how to make alkaline waterYour can also use some lavender oil, or other scented oils to help condition the skin.

Hema Sundaram, M.D., a board certified dermatologist practicing in Washington DC, recommends salt water bathing for dermatitis and various skin conditions because of its bacteriostatic properties. She suggests people at home can “try salt water compresses for skin irritation or inflammation but if the symptoms persist for 48 hours, a board-certified dermatologist should be consulted.”

Dr. Sundaram recommends sea salt because of its trace minerals, but make sure it is a non-iodized and preservative free salt.

Sea Salt Soaks for Piercings

Have a new piercing or just an infected or angry one?

Try this solution:

1.  Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and anti-bacterial soap.

2.  Put a small pinch(about 1/8 teaspoon) of ground, unprocessed sea salt (or Sole) in the bottom of a small dixie cup

3.   Add some warm water to the cup, about 5 oz.

4.   This is the tricky part, where is your piercing? If you can, try to press the cup up against the piercing tight enough to just hold it there for about 5 min. If this is just impossible, then use some cotton balls to soak up the solution and apply

5.   After repeating a couple of times, rinse the piercing with warm water.

Make sure to use pure unprocessed sea salt, NOT table salt. Real Salt is commonly carried at most grocery stores. This salt is already fine ground and can dissolve fairly quickly.

If you have piercings that are not infected or swollen, you can still use this process to clean and maintain them once a week or so.

Check out Solay Wellness for the lowest prices and biggest selection of Himalayan Salt.

What is a Himalayan Salt Block?

January 29, 2014

A great addition to every kitchen

A Himalayan salt block is a large piece of pink salt, hand carved and formed into a plate. They are carved into rectangles, circles, squares, or other neat brick-like shapes. Each plate is one of a kind, and can be rough or smooth, but probably a little of both. They are a very unique way to prepare and serve vegetables, seafood, chicken and even cold dishes like raw fish.  Not to mention it will add to the conversation of any dinner party. The best part is that the block is actually healthy for you.

How to use a salt block

There are many different ways to use your big block of salt, in and out of the kitchen.  You can cook steak inside on the stovetop, and grill shrimp outside on the BBQ .  Making homemade ice cream on a frozen block is a creative treat for children (and healthier).

By far my favorite way to use the block is to grill a steak out on the barbeque. The unique flavor it gives the meat is amazing. Not too salty, and very juicy.

Using a salt block is not difficult, but it does require a little care at first. Once you break it in, you can treat it like your favorite frying pan. The more seasoned it gets, the better. Heating slowly is the key.

  • Start by heating the block from room temperature. You don’t want to put a block on an already hot grill, this will cause it to break or crack.
  • Put it on the grill and start on low for 15 minutes. Slow, gradual heat is what we want.
  • Bring it up to medium for another 10 minutes or so while you get some other prep work done, or sip your favorite outside grilling beverage.
  • Take it up to high heat and wait another 10 minutes.
  • You can achieve your desired temperature by using a thermometer. Or the gauge on your grill. These new infrared thermometers are pretty neat, and are so easy to use.
  • Now throw on your meat, shrimp, fish, or vegetables. Not a lot of seasoning is required for food, the block provides that.
  • Using a good pair of tongs, flip your food at least once.
  • Just cook your food well, don’t BURN it!
  • And serve and enjoy, the block will retain the heat for hours.
  • Be sure to use caution when handling a hot salt block, double oven mitts work best

Is it easy to clean?

Before doing any cleaning you MUST let your block cool off a minimum of 1 hour, and maybe longer. Don’t be afraid to let it sit overnight and take care of it the next day. They stay hot for a while. This is also kind of nice because I hate to clean up after I eat if I don’t have to.

Cleaning the salt plate is pretty easy, but don’t just put it in the dishwasher.

  • Run some HOT water in the sink, and rinse your salt block quickly. Don’t soak it in water.
  • Remove from water and scrape off residue with a scouring sponge or metal spatula.
  • Now quickly rinse again in the hot water to clean.
  • Dry with a clean dish towel, patting and flipping it as you go. Don’t drop it, as it might break or smash your foot.
  • Now set on counter and let it air dry.

Be sure to store your salt block in a clean dry place, free of moisture. I leave mine right on the counter next to my stove for all to see.

It is healthy to use?

While the salt block has antibacterial properties, it also contains over 84 essential minerals. How a salt block works is the salt and minerals are absorbed by the food while cooking. This leaves your food tasting perfectly seasoned and not over salty, while adding the essential minerals as well.

Some of the health benefits of cooking with a salt plate are improved blood circulation, a healthier libido, support of respiratory functions, aids with the stabilizing of blood sugar, while also keeping your body ph in balance. That’s some pretty good benefits for just cooking on something new and fun. I always love explaining how to use them to my guests as well as the health benefits of Himalayan Salt.

How much do they cost?

Salt cooking blocks are generally inexpensive, and not too hard to find. I found that shopping on Amazon for them always works out the best, the selection is good and if you have an Amazon Prime membership you can get it shipped for free!

I hope your cooking experience goes as smooth as possible, and remember that it gets easier and more fun to use after the first time.

Welcome to Sea Salt Health!

November 14, 2013

Sea salt has been growing in popularity over the past few years as a result of more and more people learning about all the health benefits sea salt has to offer. Here you will find out how our bodies crave and need salt to survive. Pink salt, Himalayan crystal salt, dead sea salt, and pure unrefined salt are all examples or healthy types.

Linus Pauling quote
We are trying to educate others and spread the word about the benefits of using real, healthy salts everyday. Whether you drink it, cook with it, bathe in it, or use it for mouthwash, sea salt is a necessity that many people don’t even know about. Salt gets a bad rap, and it should, Regular table salt should. Not Sea Salt.

Sea salts are obtained naturally from the sea, and do not go through any harsh processing like regular (and horrible for you) table salt.

Pure, unprocessed himalayan salt contains 84 essential trace minerals that your body needs in order to stay healthy. Did you know that the salt content of the oceans is similar to the salt content of our own blood? Most of us know that our body is 75% water, but what some of us don’t know is that our cells, blood, and tissues is actually a salty water solution!

What this means is we need an adequate intake of salt everyday, whether we eat it, drink it, breathe it, or even bathe in it. It is a necessity that most of us deprive our bodies of without even knowing it.

What is a Himalayan Salt Inhaler?

Himalayan Salt Inhalers are used to improve the symptoms of allergies, respiratory infection, asthma, smokers cough, dry cough and other respiratory ailments. Himalayan salt has many health benefits, and its use is shown to reduced inflammation, kill bacteria, yeast and other micro-organisms that cause sinus and respiratory infections. So by simply using a salt inhaler for 15 minutes a day can bring major health improvements.
Salt inhaler therapy (called Halo therapy, and Speleo-therapy) is a natural and effective way to improve respiratory health. This practice has a long and proven history, documented in ancient Europe. People travel from all around the world to visit the salt caves and breathe in the mineral rich air.

Asthma sufferers benefit almost immediately by just spending 15 minutes in these caves. Man made Himalayan salt caves are beginning to pop up in some of the most popular day spas also. himalayansaltcrystalstones solay wellness
The Himalayan Salt Inhaler is a small porcelain-ceramic pot that contains Himalayan salt chunks. A simple 15-20 minute breathing session can revitalize your air ways and leave you feeling more energetic. All just by sitting and watching TV while breathing! That’s right. The air you breathe in is drawn across the salt chunks and into your lungs. No batteries, no cord, just Himalayan salt.

How do you use a Salt Inhaler?

A salt inhaler is very simple to use. It comes with plenty of Himalayan crystal salt, and you fill it from the bottom by removing the silicone plug. Make sure to wash the inhaler thoroughly when you first get it to make sure all the dust and debris is out. The inhaler must be completely dry before filling and using it.

1. Just pour about 2.5 ounces of the salt into the bottom fill hole. You should use up about 1/3 of the bag that is supplied.

2. Now replace the plug and your salt inhaler is ready for use!
3. Place the inhaler to your lips and breathe. For best results breathe in through the mouth, and exhale through the nose. Try not to exhale back through the inhaler because this will stop the fresh air from coming in.
4. Repeat this process for about 15- 25 minutes, and repeat daily. salt inhaler 2
I recommend doing this year round, and try to continue to do it every day. I take a day off every here and there, and when I pick it back up the next day, it feels amazing.
The great part about the salt chunks is that you don’t use them up very fast. If you use the inhaler daily, they recommend changing the salt out monthly. My family pushes this to around every other month, and it seems to work fine. But with a fresh change you can definitely feel the difference.
I wash my inhaler out when replacing the salt, but NOT with soap! Just with warm water and that’s it. Again, also be sure the salt pipe is completely dry before filling with the pink salt. Use a hair dryer if you need to.
Never put this in the dishwasher either, it just doesn’t need all that.
When storing the inhaler make sure to keep moisture away. Just keep it in a dry, clean place.

Himalayan Salt Inhaler benefits

The salt inhaler works by passing the air you breathe in over the surface of the Himalayan salt. Natural moisture in the air absorbs the salt particles on its way to your lungs. Sort of like the air is scooping all the natural minerals straight into your lungs.

Thousands of people with respiratory ailments are finding natural relief by using salt pipes. Himalayan Salt Pipes are 100% natural, safe for nursing mothers, and is a great, non-drug using alternative to get your lungs breathing easier again. Many users claim that the length of chest colds and flus are decreased with the use of salt inhalers.
Pink Himalayan Salt is known to help with
• Asthma
• Sinus problems
• Congestion
• Bronchitis
• Common colds
• Allergies
• Hay fever
• Smokers cough
• C.O.P.D.

How to make Alkaline Water easy at home

August 23, 2013

Understanding just how important it is to drink enough water every day is very vital to your personal health. Drinking Alkaline water has many more health benefits than regular drinking water, which is a mixture of chlorine, hormones, antibiotics and various metals you don’t want to know about. Water that is alkaline has a higher ph level that helps to balance out an acidic body.

A majority of the population eats a mostly acidic diet, which causes a drop in our body’s ph and weakens all of our body systems. If our body is acidic, it is a breeding place for disease.

Understanding water ph

The ph of water will depend on what kind of water you are drinking, as you will want to test your drinking water to find out where yours is. ph (Potential of Hydrogen) is the measure of alkalinity or acidity of a solution. The scale of measure is from 0-14, where 7 is the balance point. Ph below 7 is considered acidic, while ph above 7 would be more alkaline.

With water making up almost 80% of our body the importance of the ph is that much more important. Our bodies have a acid-alkaline ratio that is a balance between positively charged ions (acid), and negatively charged ion (alkaline). The body will work to balance this ratio to a healthy range, somewhere between 6.0 -6.5 in the am hours, and 6.5-7.0 in the pm hours.

If you have never tested your own ph levels, I recommend you do. Testing can be done easily at home, and is now easier than ever. Find out more about testing your ph here.

Most that have an unbalanced ph are found to be acidic. An acidic body is very unhealthy for a number of reasons, most importantly the risk of disease.

When you are acidic, your body will borrow minerals from organs, tissues, and bones to balance you out. These minerals you are robbing from yourself help to remove the acid from the body, putting a strain on the entire system. This can cause severe and prolonged damage if not treated or reacted to by you.

Being acidic on a regular basis can lead to

  • Obesity, Weight gain, and diabetes
  • Immune deficiency
  • Premature aging
  • Cardiovascular damage, constriction of blood vessels, and oxygen reduction
  • Joint pain and aching muscles
  • Kidney and bladder stones
  • Rapid free radical damage, possibly causing cancerous growth
  • Chronic fatigue

If you find you have an unbalanced ph, its time to take some action.

What is alkaline water

Drinking alkaline water helps the body to detoxify. Toxins are acids, and to maintain a balanced ph while detoxifying you need plenty of alkaline buffers. Alkaline water has plenty of these buffers, and will help rid the body of acidic waste. Our blood actually enforces a balanced ph, and if the water you drink is too acidic, the body is unable to flush out the acidic waste from your cells and tissues. Your organs will deteriorate and disease will set in over time if the body is not allowed to flush out the waste.

The water you drink should have an alkalinity of 9-10 on the ph scale. The popularity of alkaline water in stores is on the rise. But beware, not all bottled water is created equal. Some brands of bottled water are acidic also, and who knows how long they’ve been sitting on that shelf!

Expensive brands of bottled water, such as Essentia, are actually alkaline. But they are also oxidizing. The water may look great in that plastic bottle, but the truth is maintaining the right alkaline ph levels for long periods of time is pretty much impossible. Bacteria will eventually grow in this environment, and gambling on that doesn’t seem wise. Drinking bottled water is just like eating vegetables out of a can. You are losing a lot of the essential benefits of water when drinking out of a plastic bottle.

Solution? Make your OWN!

Make your own Alkaline Water Easy

This is my quick, easy, and cheap way to make alkaline water at home.

Depending on what time of water you use, your results will vary. I personally use filtered spring water from the local spring water company. how to make alkaline waterWhatever you use for drinking water in your home is your preference, but by making it alkaline will be even better. I do not suggest using tap water with this recipe, for that would just be silly.

  • 1 pitcher (64 ounces)  of filtered water
  • 1 Organic lemon –washed and cut into eighths
  • 1.5 tsp. Himalayan Pink Salt – for the balanced mineral content.

  • Fill the pitcher
  • Add in lemon wedges –don’t squeeze them! Just drop them in whole
  • Add 1.5 tsp. Himalayan Pink salt
  • Put cover back on pitcher
  • Put in fridge overnight
  • If you want room temp its ok to leave out
  • Let sit overnight
  • Drink first thing in the morning and all day!

Once you do this recipe a few times it becomes routine. You don’t need to spend a ton of money and the store for bottled alkaline water. You just really don’t know what you’re getting anymore.

Why Sea Salt is better than table salt

May 1, 2013

Sea Salt is better than ordinary table salt

Sea Salt is better than ordinary table salt

Everyday people are growing smarter and more careful about the food they buy, and more importantly what those foods contain. Shopping at the grocery store has become more intense than ever and our understanding of those silly labels has become way to familiar.

How many calories? How much trans fat? Too much cholesterol and not enough protein. How about vitamins? Which minerals do we need more of? We look at all these things while comparing products for price, and that’s when we have to worry about quality. Errrrrr.

Sodium is one of the more commonly checked items on these lists, and is for sure one of the most important. It is a major contributor to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and strokes.

Sodium is also more commonly known as table salt. Table salt is typically mined from underground deposits and then heavily processed to strip out the healthy minerals to make it easier and cheaper to use.  After stripping out the good stuff, anti-caking agents are added along with iodine. This makes for one really unhealthy condiment that we can find anywhere.

Then why do we love the taste of salt?

Salt definetly improves the taste of our food, no doubt about that. Or do we just think that? Studies show that salty foods have an addictive taste to them, and you know we just want to keep eating something good, even when its all gone.

Think about it, junk food is way too high in sodium, its the worst contributor to today’s problem. About 10% of our daily intake of salt is natural, while a whopping 75% is taken in through processed food. Which means we are eating way more than our recommended daily allowances.

The FDA sets the daily recommended sodium at 2300 milligrams per day.

That number drops to 1500 milligrams per day if you are:

  • over the age of 50
  • black
  • have high blood pressure
  • diabetic
  • have chronic kidney disease

Did you know that a McDonald”s McChicken sandwich contains over 800 milligrams of sodium alone? Throw in a large fry and your way over 1000 milligrams for the day, with many more meals to go. Outrageous I know, but how many people realize the damage they are doing to themselves with a cheap lunch.

Its a simple fact that we love the taste of salt, not just that it makes our food taste better. We have at least 4 main taste receptors on our tongues. Bitter, salty, sweet, and sour. What salt does is actually cancel out the bitterness of food. It doesn’t add flavor, it simply masks the bad taste.

Do we need Salt at all?

Of course we do. We all do. It is in fact a natural mineral.  Salt is needed by the body for proper functioning of nerve transmissions and muscle contractions. It also helps to prevent dehydration and aids in retaining water. Salt is a vital nutrient that our bodies would not survive without, so its very natural that we love and crave it. It is so important,  that when people go on low-sodium diets they must be monitored for proper kidney function. People who take diuretics also must be monitored for their blood sodium levels, if they fall too low seizures or coma may result. But not just people with health problems, athletes and normal people can be at risk also. After a sweaty workout, drinking only plain water is not enough to replenish the sodium you need. A good mix of water and sea salt  is the best way to get the sodium back into the cells. Learn how to make your own sea salt drink mix here.

But doesn’t salt dehydrate you?

Regular salt yes, but sea salt works different. A quality unprocessed sea salt provides electrolytes, and over 84 natural minerals. By adding just a drop of sea salt to your drinking water will provide with many benefits like:

  • decreased fatigue
  • boost the immune system
  • help with adrenal disorders
  • aid in balancing thyroid disorders
  • soothes away headaches
  • lower cholesterol levels
  • helps to lower high blood pressure levels

So should we stop buying regular salt? Heck yes!

Should I replace my salt with sea salt? Heck yes!

I know i did, I use sea salt for everything now, cooking, drinking, small cuts and rashes, a little for my dogs, and even as mouthwash!

My family now begins everyday by drinking a glass of sea salt and water, a mixture called Sole (pronounced so-lay). Sole is a concentrated solution of sea salt and water.  Just adding one teaspoon of Sole to your morning water will start your morning off better than coffee can.  Learn how to make Sole here.

With all the benefits of sea salt, and all the bad press on regular table salt, I don’t see how anyone could still buy regular salt and give it to their family.
