We are trying to educate others and spread the word about the benefits of using real, healthy salts everyday. Whether you drink it, cook with it, bathe in it, or use it for mouthwash, sea salt is a necessity that many people don’t even know about. Salt gets a bad rap, and it should, Regular table salt should. Not Sea Salt.

Sea salts are obtained naturally from the sea, and do not go through any harsh processing like regular (and horrible for you) table salt.

What is a Himalayan Salt Block?

A Himalayan salt block is a large piece of pink salt, hand carved and formed into a plate. They are carved into rectangles, circles, squares, or other neat brick-like shapes. Each plate is one of a kind, and can be rough or smooth, but probably a little of both. They are a very unique way to prepare and serve vegetables, seafood, chicken and even cold dishes like raw fish.  Not to mention it will add to the conversation of any dinner party. The best part is that the block is actually healthy for you.

How to use a salt block

There are many different ways to use your big block of salt, in and out of the kitchen.  You can cook steak inside on the stovetop, and grill shrimp outside on the BBQ .  Making homemade ice cream on a frozen block is a creative treat for children (and healthier).

By far my favorite way to use the block is to grill a steak out on the barbeque. The unique flavor it gives the meat is amazing. Not too salty, and very juicy.

Using a salt block is not difficult, but it does require a little care at first. Once you break it in, you can treat it like your favorite frying pan. The more seasoned it gets, the better. Heating slowly is the key.

  • Start by heating the block from room temperature. You don’t want to put a block on an already hot grill, this will cause it to break or crack.
  • Put it on the grill and start on low for 15 minutes. Slow, gradual heat is what we want.
  • Bring it up to medium for another 10 minutes or so while you get some other prep work done, or sip your favorite outside grilling beverage.
  • Take it up to high heat and wait another 10 minutes.
  • You can achieve your desired temperature by using a thermometer. Or the gauge on your grill. These new infrared thermometers are pretty neat, and are so easy to use.
  • Now throw on your meat, shrimp, fish, or vegetables. Not a lot of seasoning is required for food, the block provides that.
  • Using a good pair of tongs, flip your food at least once.
  • Just cook your food well, don’t BURN it!
  • And serve and enjoy, the block will retain the heat for hours.
  • Be sure to use caution when handling a hot salt block, double oven mitts work best

 

Is it easy to clean?

Before doing any cleaning you MUST let your block cool off a minimum of 1 hour, and maybe longer. Don’t be afraid to let it sit overnight and take care of it the next day. They stay hot for a while. This is also kind of nice because I hate to clean up after I eat if I don’t have to.

Cleaning the salt plate is pretty easy, but don’t just put it in the dishwasher.

  • Run some HOT water in the sink, and rinse your salt block quickly. Don’t soak it in water.
  • Remove from water and scrape off residue with a scouring sponge or metal spatula.
  • Now quickly rinse again in the hot water to clean.
  • Dry with a clean dish towel, patting and flipping it as you go. Don’t drop it, as it might break or smash your foot.
  • Now set on counter and let it air dry.

Be sure to store your salt block in a clean dry place, free of moisture. I leave mine right on the counter next to my stove for all to see.

It is healthy to use?

While the salt block has antibacterial properties, it also contains over 84 essential minerals. How a salt block works is the salt and minerals are absorbed by the food while cooking. This leaves your food tasting perfectly seasoned and not over salty, while adding the essential minerals as well.

How do you use a Salt Inhaler?

How to make Alkaline Water easy at home

Understanding just how important it is to drink enough water every day is very vital to your personal health. Drinking Alkaline water has many more health benefits than regular drinking water, which is a mixture of chlorine, hormones, antibiotics and various metals you don’t want to know about. Water that is alkaline has a higher ph level that helps to balance out an acidic body.

A majority of the population eats a mostly acidic diet, which causes a drop in our body’s ph and weakens all of our body systems. If our body is acidic, it is a breeding place for disease.

Understanding water ph

The ph of water will depend on what kind of water you are drinking, as you will want to test your drinking water to find out where yours is. ph (Potential of Hydrogen) is the measure of alkalinity or acidity of a solution. The scale of measure is from 0-14, where 7 is the balance point. Ph below 7 is considered acidic, while ph above 7 would be more alkaline.

With water making up almost 80% of our body the importance of the ph is that much more important. Our bodies have a acid-alkaline ratio that is a balance between positively charged ions (acid), and negatively charged ion (alkaline). The body will work to balance this ratio to a healthy range, somewhere between 6.0 -6.5 in the am hours, and 6.5-7.0 in the pm hours.

Most that have an unbalanced ph are found to be acidic. An acidic body is very unhealthy for a number of reasons, most importantly the risk of disease.

When you are acidic, your body will borrow minerals from organs, tissues, and bones to balance you out. These minerals you are robbing from yourself help to remove the acid from the body, putting a strain on the entire system. This can cause severe and prolonged damage if not treated or reacted to by you.

Being acidic on a regular basis can lead to

  • Obesity, Weight gain, and diabetes
  • Immune deficiency
  • Premature aging
  • Cardiovascular damage, constriction of blood vessels, and oxygen reduction
  • Joint pain and aching muscles
  • Kidney and bladder stones
  • Rapid free radical damage, possibly causing cancerous growth

What is alkaline water

Drinking alkaline water helps the body to detoxify. Toxins are acids, and to maintain a balanced ph while detoxifying you need plenty of alkaline buffers. Alkaline water has plenty of these buffers, and will help rid the body of acidic waste. Our blood actually enforces a balanced ph, and if the water you drink is too acidic, the body is unable to flush out the acidic waste from your cells and tissues. Your organs will deteriorate and disease will set in over time if the body is not allowed to flush out the waste.

The water you drink should have an alkalinity of 9-10 on the ph scale. The popularity of alkaline water in stores is on the rise. But beware, not all bottled water is created equal. Some brands of bottled water are acidic also, and who knows how long they’ve been sitting on that shelf!

Expensive brands of bottled water, such as Essentia, are actually alkaline. But they are also oxidizing. The water may look great in that plastic bottle, but the truth is maintaining the right alkaline ph levels for long periods of time is pretty much impossible. Bacteria will eventually grow in this environment, and gambling on that doesn’t seem wise. Drinking bottled water is just like eating vegetables out of a can. You are losing a lot of the essential benefits of water when drinking out of a plastic bottle.

Make your own Alkaline Water Easy

 

This is my quick, easy, and cheap way to make alkaline water at home.

Depending on what time of water you use, your results will vary. I personally use filtered spring water from the local spring water company. Whatever you use for drinking water in your home is your preference, but by making it alkaline will be even better. I do not suggest using tap water with this recipe, for that would just be silly.

Ingredients

  • 1 pitcher (64 ounces)  of filtered water
  • 1 Organic lemon –washed and cut into eighths
  • 1.5 tsp. Himalayan Pink Salt – for the balanced mineral content.

 

Directions

  • Fill the pitcher
  • Add in lemon wedges –don’t squeeze them! Just drop them in whole
  • Add 1.5 tsp. Himalayan Pink salt
  • Put cover back on pitcher
  • Put in fridge overnight
  • If you want room temp its ok to leave out
  • Let sit overnight
  • Drink first thing in the morning and all day!

Once you do this recipe a few times it becomes routine. You don’t need to spend a ton of money and the store for bottled alkaline water. You just really don’t know what you’re getting anymore.

 

 

Why you should try a Sea Salt Cleanse

Sea salt CleanseI’m a pretty healthy guy, but sometimes I wonder if my body is running as efficient as it could be. I eat healthy foods (most of the time) and drink plenty of water. I exercise a couple of times a week to make sure my heart rate gets a little kick in the rear.

Do not use regular table salt for this flush!

Regular table salt is poison. It is chemically treated and processed so that all the minerals are stripped out, and all you get is the sodium chloride. Then the anti-caking agents are added and this is just not healthy. These salts are highly toxic and can be very costly to your health. Sea Salt Cleanse Instructions

  1. When you first wake up in the morning, before drinking or eating anything, (including coffee!)

 

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of the high quality sea salt, Himalayan salt if you have it, to 1 quart of room temperature water. Use good quality filtered water, spring water, or mineral water. Fiji water works well also.

 

  1. Slightly warming the water can increase your maximum results, and may speed the process up a bit. Just pour the quart into a small pot and heat up, do not boil!!

 

  1. The taste of the flush isn’t for everyone; some people even hold their noses while drinking. Just do what you need to do to get it down. Personally I prefer the taste of salt in my water now, maybe just an acquired taste.

 

  1. You must drink the entire salt flush within a few minutes, I try to just stand there and slam it all in a couple of big gulps.  Then you drink another quart of the same water within 30 minutes.

 

  1. Do not eat anything for at least the next 2 hours. Your body must have time to work! By not having anything in your stomach after allows your body to focus on the task at hand. Avoid drinking coffee (I know), tea, or anything else that may be dehydrating. Just keep drinking water.

 

What happens next?

 

Now the fun begins!  Most people experience several bowels movements within 1 to 2 hours. The first movement can happen within the first half hour, so don’t expect to just hop in the car right away! Stay near the bathroom and be ready.

While waiting for the first bowel elimination I prefer to help the process along by lying down on my side and gently rubbing on my stomach and abdomen for about 10 minutes, then flip over to the other side and repeat. I’ve found this to be helpful and it relaxes me as well.

Now don’t think that this is like explosive diarrhea, or painful. It’s not that bad at all. Just have something handy to read and expect to spend the next couple of hours wearing a path back and forth to the bathroom.

It’s probably safe to leave the house after a couple of hours. A good indication that you are done is the bowel movements will become less frequent. If the last elimination was mainly clear fluid, then the flush should be about done.

This may not happen exactly the same way for everyone, and this is not a science. It may take a couple of different flush sessions to achieve a complete gastrointestinal flush, but that’s ok. You’re making healthy progress.

What if it didn’t work?

There are, unfortunately a small percentage of people who will not flush out. I’m not exactly sure why, some people say it’s a mineral deficiency, or internal damage to the lining of your gastrointestinal tract (before the flush), or maybe a lack of specific beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract.

Also people who tend to retain water do not flush well either. Women who are close to that time of the month may also have trouble flushing for this reason. This will only cause some bloating and extra water retention, which may be a little uncomfortable at worst.

My first few flushes went really well, just as described above. But I had one that just made me feel full of water for a few hours, and caused a lot of urination. I still felt ok during and after, and I could’ve been from a large meal I had the day before.

I recommend trying this at least a few times, varying your diet beforehand to get the best results. Maybe light salads and plenty of water the day before.

The bottom line is some of us just will not flush out and will have to explore the other cleansing alternatives.

Sea Salt Cleanse Routine

You can take the salt flush as a scheduled routine or as you feel necessary. I vary my routine a little, but at least once a month is what I’ve been doing and it’s working great. Yours could be anywhere from a few times a week, or every day for a week just to see how you feel.

If you have severe bowel deficiencies, and the first flush worked well for you, you may want to do a sea salt cleanse once a day for one week. Then reduce the amount of days the following week, time permitting of course. You just can’t spend your whole life flushing! This will rapidly clear out your gastrointestinal tract, and restore proper bowel function.

Here’s a good example routine:

  • Sea salt flush once a day for week 1
  • Flush every other day for week 2, 3 total flushes
  • Week 3 flush 2 times
  • Week 4 flush 1 time
  • Every other week, to once a month indefinitely

 

Like I said, this is not an exact science. Every person is different and most will have great success, a small group of us will not. Hopefully you can develop a routine that is beneficial to you and your diet, and the feeling you will have is like no other.

Everyday people are growing smarter and more careful about the food they buy, and more importantly what those foods contain. Shopping at the grocery store has become more intense than ever and our understanding of those silly labels has become way to familiar.

How many calories? How much trans fat? Too much cholesterol and not enough protein. How about vitamins? Which minerals do we need more of? We look at all these things while comparing products for price, and that’s when we have to worry about quality. Errrrrr.

Sodium is one of the more commonly checked items on these lists, and is for sure one of the most important. It is a major contributor to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and strokes.

Sodium is also more commonly known as table salt. Table salt is typically mined from underground deposits and then heavily processed to strip out the healthy minerals to make it easier and cheaper to use.  After stripping out the good stuff, anti-caking agents are added along with iodine. This makes for one really unhealthy condiment that we can find anywhere.

Then why do we love the taste of salt?

Salt definetly improves the taste of our food, no doubt about that. Or do we just think that? Studies show that salty foods have an addictive taste to them, and you know we just want to keep eating something good, even when its all gone.

Think about it, junk food is way too high in sodium, its the worst contributor to today’s problem. About 10% of our daily intake of salt is natural, while a whopping 75% is taken in through processed food. Which means we are eating way more than our recommended daily allowances.

The FDA sets the daily recommended sodium at 2300 milligrams per day.

That number drops to 1500 milligrams per day if you are:

  • over the age of 50
  • black
  • have high blood pressure
  • diabetic
  • have chronic kidney disease

Did you know that a McDonald”s McChicken sandwich contains over 800 milligrams of sodium alone? Throw in a large fry and your way over 1000 milligrams for the day, with many more meals to go. Outrageous I know, but how many people realize the damage they are doing to themselves with a cheap lunch.

Its a simple fact that we love the taste of salt, not just that it makes our food taste better. We have at least 4 main taste receptors on our tongues. Bitter,salty, sweet, and sour. What salt does is actually cancel out the bitterness of food. It doesn’t add flavor, it simply masks the bad taste.

Do we need Salt at all?

Of course we do. We all do. It is in fact a natural mineral.  Salt is needed by the body for proper functioning of nerve transmissions and muscle contractions. It also helps to prevent dehydration and aids in retaining water. Salt is a vital nutrient that our bodies would not survive without, so its very natural that we love and crave it. It is so important,  that when people go on low-sodium diets they must be monitored for proper kidney function. People who take diuretics also must be monitored for their blood sodium levels, if they fall too low seizures or coma may result. But not just people with health problems, athletes and normal people can be at risk also. After a sweaty workout, drinking only plain water is not enough to replenish the sodium you need. Should I replace my salt with sea salt? Heck yes!

I know i did, I use sea salt for everything now, cooking, drinking, small cuts and rashes, a little for my dogs, and even as mouthwash!

My family now begins everyday by drinking a glass of sea salt and water, a mixture called Sole (pronounced so-lay). Just one teaspoon a day is all you need.

When your mouth is dry and you all you crave is a bottle of water, try mixing in some Sea Salt next time.

Dehydration begins to occur in your body when you lose more fluid than you are taking in. Your body does not have enough fluid to carry out its normal functions and begins to make mistakes. This is not good.

Many experts and doctors are now recommending the use of Sea Salt to help combat dehydration in the body, just by simply adding it to your drinking water.

But wont sea salt make me thirsty?

Actually… No.

Sea salt contains more than 84 minerals and nutrients that our body needs and craves on a daily basis. It has been used throughout history for achieving and maintaining optimum health. By adding just a pinch of sea salt to a glass of water will blast these minerals and nutrients into your body. This satisfies your thirst longer because the mineral content holds more of the water within your body.

But you thought salt made you thirsty right?

Yes, that is correct. TABLE salt will make you thirsty. Pure, cheap, white table salt is horrible for bodies. This salt is heavily processed which takes away all the essential nutrients we need, additives are also used to prevent clumping. These additives often cause a range of health problems and aggravate edema (fluid retention caused by dehydration.) The lack of minerals in table salt also make it addictive. After eating salt, the body craves more salt. Not because it tastes good, but because the body’s requirement for nutrients was not satisfied.

More than 1500 milligrams of sodium a day can be bad for your health, this is no secret. Which is why sea salt is becoming much more appealing.

How do I know if I’m dehydrated?

If your mouth is dry and sticky, you are already in a mild state of dehydration.

Other mild symptoms include:

  • Thirst
  • Sleepiness, or tiredness (children less active)
  • Decreased urine output (no wet diapers for 3 hours, 8 hours between urination for kids and teens)
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness

The Institute of  Medicine recommends drinking about 3 liters of water a day for men, and about 2.2 liters for women. Now if you exercise, spend time outside, or not feeling good you need to increase the amount of fluid you take in. There is no harm in over drinking water for a day. Your body will immediately flush out any unused fluid, along with other waste.

Most adult males drink about 4 cups a day, this is way to low. If you are above this number you are doing good, but the right amount varies for every person.

I like to gauge my hydration by my urine. If it is a pale, yellowish color I know my hydration is good.

I also, like most people, follow a pattern everyday. I usually have to pee about the same time, same place, everyday. If my routine is off, I know to check my water consumption.

Whats the first thing you do when you get a nasty cut?

Do you wash it first, or apply pressure? Or maybe you go straight for the antibacterial cream and bandaid. I know some people that go directly to the phone to call someone else and ask what to do….

We all know the first thing we need to do is

  • Stop the bleeding,
       Then…
  • clean the wound.

But what to clean it with?

Recently I began using sea salt for many different ailments such as joint pain, constipation, better sleep, and even sore throats. There are so many more uses than just these, every person has different problems that can be solved.

 

Healing power of Sea Salt

 

Ever hear the expression, “throwing salt in the wound”?

This may sound like a painful remedy, but the reality is sea salt is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic.

For thousands of years people have been using salt to heal the body, and recently it is becoming more popular with people looking to avoid the drug store.

Ancient Egyptians had recorded its effectiveness, and the Roman doctors used sea salt in ointments and various drinks for healing purposes.

Even our first president, George Washington, bought some land in West Virginia so he could “take on the waters” more frequently.

Fast forward to today and our nations top soldiers, Navy SEALS even say that if they have a scrape or cut, they know that being in the sea water will clean them up and speed up the healing process.

What happens when the sea salt enters the wound is it forces the moisture out of the cells that are causing the swelling. By removing this moisture, the cells shrink up, and take bacteria with them. All of this is a natural, painless process.

Even though the “salt in the wound” expression sounds painful, it really isn’t if you use the right amount. I’m not telling you to just shake the salt shaker into a cut, of course, there is a small solution making process that is very easy and affordable.

Sea salt for cuts

 

We’ve all had many different small cuts to major slices and abrasions. Sea salt can help all of them including

 

  • small cuts
  • abrasions
  • scratches
  • rashes
  • skin conditions (psoriasis and eczema to name some)
  • large cuts and slices
  • piercings
  • cold sores

 

Pretty much any open sore or skin condition and many more!

Using sea salt as a soak is the best way to get the solution into an infected area. You can make a Sole solution, which is easy to do with this recipe.

 

 

Salt soak in a bath for healing

 

To use the sea salt in a bath soak, use about a cup of the unprocessed sea salt in a very warm bath. Your can also use some lavender oil, or other scented oils to help condition the skin.

Hema Sundaram, M.D., a board certified dermatologist practicing in Washington DC, recommends salt water bathing for dermatitis and various skin conditions because of its bacteriostatic properties. She suggests people at home can “try salt water compresses for skin irritation or inflammation but if the symptoms persist for 48 hours, a board-certified dermatologist should be consulted.”

Dr. Sundaram recommends sea salt because of its trace minerals, but make sure it is a non-iodized and preservative free salt.

 

Sea Salt Soaks for Piercings

 

Have a new piercing or just an infected or angry one?

Try this solution:

 

1.  Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and anti-bacterial soap.

2.  Put a small pinch(about 1/8 teaspoon) of ground, unprocessed sea salt (or Sole) in the bottom of a small dixie cup

3.   Add some warm water to the cup, about 5 oz.

4.   This is the tricky part, where is your piercing? If you can, try to press the cup up against the piercing tight enough to just hold it there for about 5 min. If this is just impossible, then use some cotton balls to soak up the solution and apply

5.   After repeating a couple of times, rinse the piercing with warm water.

Make sure to use pure unprocessed sea salt, NOT table salt. Real Salt is commonly carried at most grocery stores. This salt is already fine ground and can dissolve fairly quickly.

If you have piercings that are not infected or swollen, you can still use this process to clean and maintain them once a week or so.
